AS DELIVERED

Mr. President, the United States would like to thank UNFPA for the opportunity to comment on the Draft Country Programme Document for South Africa.

The United States commends the draft programme for its aims to contribute towards addressing the country’s challenges related to poverty, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, gender-based violence, and harmful traditional practices.

We are pleased with the inclusion of indicators and programme activities related to young people. However, we also encourage UNFPA to consider development of a more comprehensive behavioral change communication strategy for youth. We also recommend that the provincial and district governments should have detailed plans and indicators for youth behavior change activities.

Thank you again for the opportunity to comment.
