FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
I condemn today’s despicable attacks in Baghdad in the strongest terms and extend my condolences to the injured and to the families of those who lost their lives.
These reprehensible acts will not derail the overwhelming desire of the Iraqi people to live in peace. This week’s passage of a new election law, which will lead to a vote in March, is just the latest demonstration of the resolve of the Iraqi people to determine their own future through democratic and peaceful means.
The United States supports the United Nations as it continues its vital work in Iraq, including its crucial role in preparing for and conducting democratic elections. We stand with the Iraqi people as they look toward a more peaceful future.
