Remarks by Ambassador Susan E. Rice, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on Burma, at the Security Council Stakeout

Susan E. Rice
United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations

New York, NY

I am about to join my colleagues. Good Afternoon.
We certainly welcome the opportunity to have this discussion today with colleagues on the situation in Burma. The United States will join with others in introducing a statement for consideration by the Council that condemns the conviction of Aung San Suu Kyi, that calls for her immediate release and ability to participate in the political process.

We recognize that other members of the Council may take different views on this, and we think it is important nonetheless to have a discussion and a debate and to seek as a matter of principle and policy a statement by the Council in accord with the principles of the Charter and the principles of democracy and respect for human rights that we are committed to.

Thank you.
