On behalf of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, I condemn yesterday's violence at Camp Ashraf in which numerous people were injured and as many as 47 people killed. I extend my condolences to all those impacted by this terrible event.

We urge all parties to demonstrate restraint and call upon the Government of Iraq and the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) to cooperate with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) as it seeks to provide an objective assessment of what occurred. All parties must work together to ensure the safety and security of the men, women and children living at Camp Ashraf and Camp Hurriya.

The United States reaffirms its strong support for the UN’s work in Iraq and commends the men and women working with UNAMI and the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) for their courage and continued service to the people of Iraq and the residents of Camps Ashraf and Hurriya.
