FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ambassador Power met today with UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar Tomas Ojea Quintana to discuss his report to the Third Committee and how the United States can continue to support democratic transition in Burma. They also discussed shared concerns regarding the situation facing members of vulnerable minority populations, including the Rohingya. During the meeting Ambassador Power stressed the United States' view that opening a permanent Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights with a full mandate will send an important signal about the government's readiness for a new phase of engagement with the United Nations and wider international community.
