FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
I want to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for Ambassador Joseph Torsella, who will depart the U.S. Mission to the UN at the end of the year to pursue other endeavors. Joe has been part of the team since 2011 and his leadership has been indispensable.
The Obama Administration came into office committed to making the United Nations a more effective and credible venue for advancing U.S. interests and values and forging a more secure and prosperous world. Joe has been at the forefront of those efforts – launching the U.S. reform agenda at the UN, promoting UN budget discipline and cost savings, successfully negotiating the UN scales of assessment, securing for the first time the public disclosure of internal UN audits and investigations, as well as those of UN funds and programs, and brokering a significant deal on the Senior Advisory Group’s recommendations on peacekeeping reform. His efforts will have a lasting impact on the United Nations for years to come.
As Joe would say, every dollar spent at the UN represents the hard work of a taxpayer somewhere, and every dollar squandered is an opportunity squandered to build a more modern, efficient, effective United Nations. The United States will continue to build on his significant contributions and work towards a United Nations that can more fully realize its founding values.
