Statement by Ambassador Samantha Power, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on the Appointment of Staffan de Mistura as the UN Special Envoy for Syria

New York, NY
July 10, 2014

I am pleased to welcome the appointment of Mr. Staffan de Mistura as the new UN Special Envoy of the Secretary General for Syria.

Mr. de Mistura brings a wealth of diplomatic experience and regional knowledge to his new posting, having previously served in a range of UN roles, including as the UN’s Special Representative in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Throughout his career, he has proven a tenacious and creative problem solver, and a tireless champion of peace, security, and human dignity.

Of course we should be clear about the challenges he faces as he takes up his new role. Millions of Syrians experience a brutal daily reality: relentless aerial bombardment; the siege of whole communities; and the Syrian Government’s continued deliberate prevention of life-saving humanitarian assistance from reaching children, women and men in hard-to-reach areas.

I would also like to welcome the appointment of Ambassador Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy as the Deputy Special Envoy for Syria.

The United States stands ready to work with Mr. de Mistura, Ambassador Ramzy and the international community to find a negotiated political solution to the Syrian crisis that builds on the principles outlined in the Geneva Communique and the previous work of Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi. We also strongly support on-going U.N. efforts to engage intensively with all Syrian stakeholders, including the opposition and civil society, both inside and outside the country, and hope the new Special Envoy can deepen these vital efforts.

We remain dedicated to achieving peace that will end the violence and catastrophic suffering that has plagued Syria for more than three years.
